Helping America's most vulnerable™

2017 Fiscal year / 2018 Report to the community

BUILDING ON EXCELLENCE

In our 122 years of serving people, we have encountered our share of turbulence in the funding environment where we work. This year was above average. It tested our resilience and confirmed our mission to help people gain self-reliance, dignity and hope. The stories in this report explore what’s possible when we build on that mission.

These are the times that demand excellence, accountability and compassion. Our array of services lets us take a broad view of community needs, and still be person-centered. We understand the inter-connectedness of poverty, trauma, health, education, housing and criminality. At our core is the belief that when people reach their full potential, everyone benefits. In 2017, we served 21,584 people, but we focused on each one, like Diego, Halimo, Mohamed and James.

Self-reliance

Diego owns a body-shop that repairs and restores vehicles, a fitting metaphor for the restoration he achieved in his own life. Diego had help from our residential reentry center in Roseville, following his incarceration. He paid that assistance forward by hiring other Roseville residents to work in his business.

Dignity

Halimo and Mohamed are Somali immigrants who live in Minneapolis Public Housing. Our Community Health Worker (CHW) services won a grant from the Minneapolis Health Department to be a key part of their support. You’ll read about Deqa, a CHW, who offers dignity and a bridge to good health for more than 50 clients.

Hope

James has hope that he could not have envisioned when he was confined to a state-run institution in Wisconsin for people with intellectual disabilities. His six-year trusting relationship with Alissa, a regional manager in our Services for People with Special Needs, shows what can be achieved with the courage to innovate.

We are putting what we have learned into practice as we build on excellence. We will anchor our hope in our relationships with the people we serve and with people like you. Thank you for your support, your involvement and your partnership.
