About Amicus

Volunteers of America of Minnesota's Amicus services offer hope, connection, and support to community members with a criminal record. For over 57 years, Amicus has focused on building successful lives and stronger communities through helping women and men as they overcome the challenges and obstacles that a criminal record brings, offering a support network that instills hope and imparts practical skills and strategies. Through personalized guidance, education, and services before and after release, Amicus helps people increase confidence in their abilities and overcome barriers related to employment, housing, family reunification, and wellness.

“Coming out of prison I hadn’t often heard the words, ‘How can I help you?’  When you come into Amicus the first thing you hear is ‘How can I help you today?’” —Amicus participant and volunteer

Senior Director of Community Justice, Chris Doege, recently sat down with One to One friends, Zach and Mike. One to One matches volunteers with individuals who are incarcerated, resulting in relationships that offer friendship and support. This conversation centers on how and why Zach and Mike became involved in the program, what their relationship has meant to them, and the lessons they have learned from each other. Their story reveals the impact that the simple gift of friendship can have.
