About

Senior Nutrition provides hot and nutritious meals to adults who are ages 60 and over in the community, as well as some individuals with disabilities under the age of 60 depending on the site. Please verify eligibility criteria with each site.

We provide hot and nutritious meals at all of our dining sites and also over 35 different frozen meals at all of our “Traditional” dining sites. Frozen meals are not available at our “Ethnic” sites because the meals come from small, local, culturally authentic restaurants. In other words, we have frozen meals available at all sites unless they serve an ethnic meal from a local restaurant that does not have the capability to provide frozen meals.

Accessing Healthy Food

Eating healthy is important throughout our lives, but as we age, nutrition becomes even more critical. Nutrition can impact our ability to carry out daily activities, as well as influence our quality of life. Senior Nutrition provides hot and nutritious meals to over 2,300 older adults every year.

Addressing Hunger and Food Insecurity

Hunger and food insecurity are growing concerns among older adults in Minnesota. Senior Nutrition focuses on reaching older adults that are food insecure to ensure healthy aging and improve public health.

Ensure older adults have a daily meal

Good nutrition is the foundation for healthy minds and bodies. Our Senior Nutrition services provide full, nutritionally balanced meals to older adults in their homes and communities. Meals are served hot and in a sit-down style lunch where older adults can stay connected to each other and their communities.

Each community is unique and may have specific dietary needs or preferences. Our menus are crafted with respect to the unique cultural and religious dietary needs of the communities we serve.

We ask that participants contribute $5 per meal as their finances allow. This helps offset the cost of the meal. All donations are confidential.

If a participant cannot contribute $5 per meal, they are encouraged to discuss their situation with the site coordinator to make other arrangements. No one is denied a meal due to inability to pay.

Our Daily Bread

The pandemic and civil unrest created food and nutrition crises for many people living in our communities. When some organizations were shutting down their services because of COVID, Senior Nutrition staff knew their work was lifesaving and even shifted some of their services toward the community residents who were most vulnerable in the face of the pandemic- older adults and people with disabilities.

We started serving one 85-year-old man when the meal service at another community organization closed because of COVID-19. He suffers from chronic bronchitis and can barely reach down to pick up his meals. He doesn’t have much money so the meals from Senior Nutrition make his food dollars go farther. Just as importantly, staff connect with him when they deliver meals and can make sure he’s okay.

“There are a lot of organizations out there providing food,” Senior Nutrition Manager Nancy Christianson notes. “But there’s also a lot of need. Some people are falling through the cracks.” Volunteers of America Minnesota and Wisconsin is working hard to shore up these cracks and make sure as many older adults as possible have a daily, nutritious meal.
