Bruce Koehn first learned about One to One in the summer of 2020. Although it had been recommended to him years earlier by Fred Wagner, a longtime Amicus One to One supporter and former board member, Bruce felt truly inspired to take the next step after hearing a presentation at Pax Christi that same summer.
With decades of service dedicated to supporting those in need, Bruce brought a deep well of experience to his involvement. He spent 26 years working with people experiencing homeless through Cabrini House and 10 years with Project Pride in Living, serving on the boards of both organizations.
In 2021, Bruce was matched with Michael at Stillwater Correctional Facility. Following Michael’s transfer to a minimum security facility, MCF–Moose Lake, Bruce has continued their visits and friendship. Michael has described the move as “life changing.”
A shared foundation of faith has been central to their relationship—Michael is Baptist and Bruce is Catholic. Bruce often expresses admiration for Michael’s profound understanding of forgiveness and empathy, qualities that have been nurtured through Michael’s many years of involvement in restorative justice work within the prison walls.
Bruce describes his match with Michael as “unbelievable,” emphasizing that their relationship has grown far beyond either of their expectations. It has become a genuine, enduring friendship—one that both men believe will last a lifetime.
